How To Promote Your Website For Free

It seems there are literally thousands of sites that promise to promote your website or blog…..but for a price. The best known one is Google Adwords where you pay so many cents per click depending on the competition of the Keywords you want top rankings in. And while this will get your website to the top page in Google not everyone has the budget to fork out hundreds of dollars in advertising. But you can promote your site for free using some of these methods.

Most of these are going to take time to build up before you start noticing huge amounts of traffic, but they will work if your willing to put the time in.

Build Links For the Search Bots To Find You

The first thing you need to do is build links linking back to your website or blog, this is how the search engines are going to find your site, crawl it, and index it. Don’t bother submitting directly to the big search engines, this is a waste of your time and doesn’t do anything to speed up your indexing time.

However many directory sites such as DMOZ are monitored by people not bots, for these sites you’ll need to manually register to each one. There’s no guarantee on how slow it’ll take

Where To Get Links From

Directories And Social Networks

Sites like Reddit, Digg, Stumbleupon, YouTube, FaceBook and other related sites should be you next target. Anytime you add content submit a link to these sites. If people like what you’ve posted they’ll click back to your site for more. Remember not to post the same link everywhere as this can have a negative effect and look like spam. Also don’t send all your links at once to these sites because many of them will ban your account because you’re spamming them. However sites like Twitter you can post links over and over again, just remember to space it out so your not annoying people with them.

Write Articles And Hubs

Article writing will take awhile to start generating traffic for you, but over time this is a very effective way of boosting your traffic and backlines to your website or blog. As your articles get older they will get higher search rankings giving you higher backlines. Articles can also be picked up by other users who publish them on their sites giving you more back links and traffic. And most importantly the traffic they do bring to your site is targeted traffic, meaning that those users are specifically looking for content like yours. Some articles to consider looking into are

Hub Pages is kind of a mix between posting an article and a blog. They have a blog like look to them, you can post pictures and video easily, and have space for advertisements that you can make money from. And there like an article because they only have one page, which means you can post dozens of different topics like an article site, and like articles get backlines from your Hubs.

Free Classified Ads

Another way you can promote your site that many don’t use is to use free classified sites such as Craigslist, and Kijiji especially if your site is offering a service, but are also great if you’re looking for guest bloggers.

Add Your Website Link To Your Email

It doesn’t matter if the emails you’re sending off are business related or personnel, adding your URL link to your email as part of your signature is a good way to get people to notice your site. Link anything in regards to sending your link doesn’t go crazy and spam the same people twenty times a day. To goal is to get more traffic not repel it.

Leave Comments

While most blogs are “no follow” meaning that Google won’t recognize them as a link you can still increase your traffic with them. Make sure you leave a meaningful comment rather then something such as. “Hi cool site” Messages like that look like spam and usually get deleted pretty quick so spend some time and add a comment that adds value to what’s been posted. Leaving a good comment also has the benefit of getting the attention of that sites owner who may want to link to your site.

Most websites have comment sections where you can post your URL; these will either be displayed on the page in its comment section or emailed to the sites owner directly

Promote Your Website Offline,

A lot of people think that you can only get traffic online, but there are ways you can get your site noticed when not at your computer.

Business Cards

While this one isn’t always free it is good to have especially when meeting new people especially those who might be able to help your site grow. Always keep a few cards that clearly display your websites link and contact information.

Flyers

If you have a printer you can make a simply flyer that can be posted anywhere. Try to create something that catches the eye and place these flyers in locations where there’s a lot of foot traffic. You can also do things such as place then on parked cars windshields or post them on bulletin boards in buildings.

Word Of Mouth

Last but not least one of the best ways to tell people about your site is to well tell then about your site. Remember you’re trying to sell it to someone so give them a reason why they would want to visit it. If they like your site chances are they’ll tell their friends and family about your site and get you even more traffic.

Remember at the end of the day how much traffic you get depends on how much work you’re willing to do to get it and how creative you are in advertising your site. More importantly though is to remember that all the best promotion tricks won’t work if you don’t have content that interests them in the first place.
