MineCraft Review

Minecraft or as I prefer to call it “Minecrack” is a game that was recently recommend to my by a friend. At first glance the game looks like a throwback to the original Atari or Nintendo game systems (think Mario Bros type graphics minus having to jump on walking mushrooms) The game essentially has the look of a giant Lego world consisting entirely of blocks, the animals, trees, even the water are all blocks. There’s also no set point system or objective you have to reach in order to beat the game. But despite this the game is exceptionally addictive. I personally found it very easy to spend a few hours on it before I realized how much time had gone by.

What makes Minecraft so addictive is the ability to create virtually anything you want; the world is made of blocks for a reason. Using tools or your characters bare hands you can chop down trees, dig up dirt, even level a mountain because it’s in the way to create whatever you want using those blocks or turning them into something else such as turning sand into glass for example. There also doesn’t appear to be limits either on how large an object you want to create or how far you want to explore your randomly generated world. Both above ground and below seem to go on forever as new content is generated for you the farther you travel from your start point.

Game play is simple and straightforward. Your character is dropped into the middle of a randomly generated world. During the day you can travel around and do pretty much whatever you want. However at night monsters come out and attack you. These include giant spiders that can easily scale up walls, zombies, skeletons that shoot arrows at you, and my personnel favourite kamikaze blob bush thingy’s that explode when near you. Often they strike before you’re even aware there near you sending you and whatever you’re creating sky high.

The major emphasis is building, think of it kinda like Lego only you won’t run out of pieces and have to steal your neighbours and monsters try to kill or blow you and your creations up. Of course there are options that allow you to remove the monsters and just focusing on the building aspect of the game. Personally I prefer to have them in the game as it adds a sort of “survival” element.

Weapons are limited; you have a choice of either a sword or bow and arrows. Arrows have a somewhat limited range, but you can arc your shots from higher positions to increase their range. As for tools you can make axes to chop wood faster, pick axes to mine stone or ore, and hoes to plant seeds and grow food or new trees. The same can’t be said when it comes to crafting items. By mixing and matching different items you can create things such as bowl, torches, picture frames, even tnt because who doesn’t want to blow stuff up?

The only real drawback apart from the obvious graphics (the game is currently in its beta version so updates and improvements are being added all the time) is the time you have to invest in order to build anything. This is not a game where you can play it for 5 minutes and have that underwater base shaped like a giant skull you’ve always dreamed of having. It can take hours just to gather the resources you need to build anything. The game also lacks clear instructions (at least for now) on how to get started. While it’s a simple game to figure out what to do. I also have to go online to find out how to craft items.

Apart form those drawbacks Minecraft is extremely popular, and extremely addictive. Once you start a project I’ve found that you constantly want to add or build new things. Minecraft sells for about 20 dollars U.S. There is an older free version you can play as well, which I recommend you try out before you buy it.
