SEO Tactics That Are A Waste Of Your Time

When it comes to getting your website traffic, there are some SEO tricks that don’t work. There either outdated, over abused, or never really worked that well to begin with. So to help clear up some confusion about what SEO tactics will work and which SEO tricks that don’t work, here is a list of 12 items to consider forgetting about to save yourself some time and frustration.

1. Submitting your links to search engines

I know the big search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing all have ways you can submit your links to them. Don’t bother, submitting your links won’t get you indexed with them any faster, and it won‘t bring you traffic any faster either. If you want to be indexed fast by Google or other search engines you need to get links from trusted sites that already rank high with Google. The other search engines also tend to look at who Google indexes and follows suit. So when your pages start to rank well on Google the other search engines will start to pick up and index your links as well.

2. Meta Keywords

Back in the day (were talking the 90’s here) Meta keywords might have been an important SEO tactic. Nowadays though they are completely useless and aren’t worth the time it takes to set them up.

3. Optimizing your web pages for general or peripheral keywords

Again back in the day there was a time when you could simply type in a few dozen one word keywords and you would rank on the first page, Of course when there’s hardly any competition you can do that. Not only is trying to rank for one even two word key phrases a waste of time, you simply won’t rank for them. Instead focus on creating long tail keywords and key word phrases that are specific and answer user’s questions.

4. Linking to popular sites

I was asked once if linking to popular sites such as Google or website with a high page rank will help get their site noticed. In a word no it’s the other way around; you need links from high ranking sites to link to you. The more of these you have the better your listed on search engines, the more often Google will crawl your site, and the more traffic you’ll eventually get.

5. Republishing others content

There are sites such as Ezine articles where you can take someone else’s content and copy and paste it onto your site. And while this is fine to do, it won’t help get your website traffic or improve your search engine rankings. Instead add your own thoughts be it good or not about the article or opinion. Your goal should be to always add value, that’s what gets people interested in what you have to say.

6. Minor changes

While making minor changes to correct a problem or add value to your content is fine, making these minor changes won’t have any effect on your ranking. Google does like sites that update their content on a regular basis but this means adding new posts, and making major changes to your site. Changing the date on a particular post won’t do jack.

7. Over pinging

While using ping can help speed up the time it takes to get your pages indexed, it won’t do anything for your website traffic or your search engine ranking if you ping too much. This can result in them treating your website if it’s a spam site and will have negative effects on how well your site ranks.

8. Using the same keyword on every single page

What won’t get your website traffic, using the same dam keyword on every single page on your site from your homepage to your site map, to every article you post should have its own specific set of keywords that focus on the content of that page. There are virtually an unlimited number of keyword phrases that you can create, and if you’re serious about generating traffic you’ll want to pull in visitors from as many sources as possible.

9. Keyword stuffing

Simply put this is an SEO strategy that won’t work. Many sites that I’ve seen when it comes to keyword density suggest anywhere from 5 to 10 percent as the maximum per page, though I would personally recommend 5 as the maximum. Besides over stuffing keywords onto a page can have a very negative effect when it comes to ranking for that keyword, so don’t do it, its stupid plain and simple.

10. Using alt text on non clickable images

Alt text on images is only helpful on images that are clickable. If your images aren’t and you added keywords to them, there not going to provide you with anything.

11. XML site maps

I’m not saying you shouldn’t create an XML site map and submit it to Google webmaster tools. What I’m saying is that if your pages don’t have any internal or external link popularity it won’t make any difference. Google might be aware of those pages existence but without any links they have no value.

12. Link title attributes

Another throw back from the 90’s. Today these are completely ignored by search engines. That doesn’t mean you can’t use them to help make your site easier to navigate, just know they don’t do jack squat in boosting your search engine ranking.

So the next time you’re trying to boost your websites search engine rankings you can scratch these SEO tricks that don’t work off your list. Know of any others? If so drop a comment below and let me know.
