How To Use YouTube To Get Traffic

In my last post I showed some simple ways you can use to help get your videos more views and subscribers. Now let's talk about getting some of that traffic over to your website or blog. Being that YouTube is the most used search engine in the world right now, and showing no signs of slowing down, this is something you want to tap into.

The first thing you need to do is with the videos themselves. If you haven't done this yet, you want to include your websites URL in the video itself either at the beginning or end (I would do both personally) When placing a URL at the beginning, take a second to explain what the video is about. You want to basically sell them as to why they want to watch. For placing your sites URL at the end, let it run for about 10 seconds or so to let your viewers see who created the video. Use this time to sell them on the idea that visiting your website is a good idea. Give them a reason to visit such as having more information on how to boost website traffic, or a free giveaway. Whatever it is make it interesting so they'll want to visit.

Make sure your video has a title that will catch their attention. If your video is called "My Random Video #1" it doesn’t tell you anything about the videos content and it's boring as hell. Your title should give the viewer a good idea of what it is about. Try to use keywords in your video to help it get indexed faster and make it easier to find. Ask yourself when you're looking at videos on YouTube which ones stand out for you.

Now to get them over to your site you need to add links from your videos page. YouTube doesn’t allow your videos to actually contain clickable links in them but that doesn’t mean it can't link to your website or blog. To do this you have a couple options.

The first is to add a link in the top of the description bar (have it on the very top so it can be easily seen) directly below the video. Make sure you use the full URL address (http for example) don’t just throw the link up there by itself either as this is a perfect place to describe your video and website. Don't worry about making your description long, I recommend having a detailed description because this will make indexing your video easier for the search engines. If you have no description, the search bots will look at your comments to pick out keywords. And if you have no comments it could take far longer then what you want to get your video indexed.

The second way is use annotations ( "word" ), these are pop up bubbles that appear on places over your video and can either be activated to just pop up at a certain time or play through the entire length of the video. With these you can add your websites address, correct any information that's wrong or outdated, or link your videos together. These are great for grabbing the viewers attention because their focus is on the video, just make sure if you use them however not to put them in the most annoying place like the center of the video. Put it off o the side or the top or bottom of the video where it's out of the way of what's being displayed but easy to see. Remember you want them interested in what you're showing, not pissed off and annoyed because them they probably won't want to visit again.
