Types Of Website Traffic

When it comes to how to get website traffic, not all traffic types are equal and hold the same value. Many who are new to websites or blogs think that all traffic is one and the same. And while the number of visits might look good you have to actually look at the numbers to see the real story behind those numbers. This is one reason why using sites like Google Analytics or other traffic stat sites is important when it comes to unstanding what kind of traffic your getting.

To understand if the traffic you’re getting is good or not you have to know what types of traffic are out there, they are

1. Social Traffic
2. Paid Traffic
3. Word Of Mouth
4. Search Traffic
5. Return Traffic
1. Social Traffic

This type of traffic comes from sites such as Digg, Stumbleupon, Facebook, and Twitter to name a couple examples. This also covers video sharing sites or any other type of website that fits into the category of “social media”. Hits from these types of websites allow their visitors to find popular content, see it, and share it either to their friends, post it on their sites, or onto forums.

These types of websites you want to link to for two reasons. One they either have high Google page rank or are owned by the major search engines which means those backlinks will count. The second is that if your link can make it to the first page, you can get thousands of hits quickly from visitors curious about what your site to offer. However getting to the top page is extremely difficult. Remember to use a title for your link that appeals to the eye and grabs their attention such as a list post.
2. Paid Traffic

Paid Traffic is just that traffic you paid for. This can be either be done through paid advertisements on sites like Google Adsense and Facebook, or those shady sites that promise thousands of hits if you pay a certain amount of money. The second type should be avoided at all costs because they are a rip off, they generally don’t send actual people to your site they send bots which makes you look like a spam site in the eyes of the large search engines which can get your website kicked off the search engines because your now considered a bad neighbour site.

With paid advertisements such as Google Adsense this can work extremely well especially for a new site. Your listing will be placed on the top page. (Depending on how much you bid and the competition of that keyword or phrase) If you decided to use this avenue to promote your website do your research and use the appropriate keywords, otherwise you’re paying for nothing.
3. Word Of Mouth

Word of mouth traffic can either come from other webmasters who link to you on their blogs or websites, people who tell their friends and family about your website, or people you tell when promoting your site offline.

4. Search Traffic

These are the people who type in a keyword you’re using find your site on Google or another search engine and visit. Of all the traffic types these are probably the most important because they are targeted traffic meaning they are specifically looking for content that your site has to offer. Their not bored web browsers with time to kill they are searching the internet with a purpose.
5. Return Traffic

These are the people who’ve visited your site and have decided they want to see more. These types of visitors are most likely going to bookmark your site or subscribe to your newsletters.

Now that you know some of the types of website traffic you can plan how you market your website and which types you want to target more to maximize your results.
