First off what is a favicon? If you look at the browser bar on this webpage just before the sites URL address is a small picture. When it comes to helping make your website or blog stand out there a huge benefit. They allow your readers to find your web pages easily if they have many browser windows and tabs open at once. If a visitor bookmarks your site in their favourites list the standard “e” icon is replaced by your picture helping your link stand out from the rest so they can return to visit. And they can also be used to help brand your site. Who would have thought a tiny 16x16 picture could help that much.

Creating a customized favicon isn’t that complicated. Below I’ve listed the steps needed to create your own favicon and have it up on your website or blog in minutes. Here’s what you do.

1. First go to a favicon generating site, all the ones I’ve looked at are free but the two I personally like the best are Favicon from pics and favicon.cc. Most sites though are pretty much the same.

2. Most of these sites will give you the option to either upload a picture from your computer or create a customized one. If you choose to upload a picture you already have saved try to pick as simple of one as possible. Highly detailed pictures will look like blobs because their shrunk down to a 16x16 picture.

3. Once you find the right image it’s time to upload it to your site. Depending on who your website or blog provider is there are some different ways to do this.

If you’re using Blogger or another site that doesn’t give you the option to upload a customized favicon, you can go to iconj.com. Like the other generating sites you simply upload your picture. What’s different is that instead of a having to download a file it’s transformed into an HTML code that you copy and paste onto your website or blog header.
