One of the cornerstones of an effective SEO campaign is keyword research. Picking the right keyword phrase can mean the difference between your site being found, or having your site or having it drowned out because the keyword phrase you chose has too much competition, costs too much. Or worse is too obscure and no one will ever find it. To do effective keyword research you need a keyword research tool, it’s as simple as that.
For this post I put together a list of 6 free keyword research tools you can use.
1. Google Adwords Keyword Research Tool
What list of keyword tools would be complete without mentioning Google? Google’s keyword tool allows you to track the monthly search results of any particular keyword or phrase. It also gives you fairly accurate stats as to how much competition a particular keyword phrase has. It also gives you a list of related terms and there stats.
Another nice feature of this tool is that you modify your stats to display how a keyword ranks in other languages or countries rather then having everything set globally.
2. Wordtracker
Wordtracker is a subscription service with an annual fee of just under 400. (U.S dollars) However they do offer a free trial service that you can use. Wordtracker tends to focus its attention on long tail keywords. (Keyword phrases that are 3 words or longer) And while the free service is limited in what it can do its still worth checking out.
3. Trellian
Like Wordtracker Trellian offers two different versions of their keyword research tool. The paid version if you have the money to spend can range from about 170 a month to just under 2 grand a year. Personally I don’t have that kind of cash to spend on keyword research so I opted for the free trial version instead.
What you get is a very advanced search tool that gathers data from different search engines around the world. Some of its features include
a. industry keywords that allow you to see what your competitors are using and what kind of traffic their getting from their keywords
b. keyword spelling mistakes, to show you different commonly misspelled keywords
c. seasonal search trends
4. Google Trends
Another free keyword tool offered by Google is Google Trends. While it’s not really a tool for keyword research, it does allow you though to find out what topics are hot and which ones are in decline. This way you can focus your attention on finding keywords to match current hot trends.
5. Kgen
KGen which stands for keyword generator is a free Firefox extension that allows you to see what keywords are standing out web pages you visit. The plugin can retrieve every keyword on a particular webpage and shows you such things as how many times they appear, and their weight or importance they have on that page.
6. Wordze
Wordze offers its users over 15 keyword and SEO tools. Some of these tools include an adwords spy that allows you to lookup competing sites by domain or keyword to see what their doing. And a search trends tool that lets you see up to a years worth or traffic trends for any keyword.
While it is a paid service, they offer a 30 day free trial that allows you to use all their tools to see if you like their service
