Understanding Google And Alexa Page Rank

Look at enough blogs or websites and you’ve probably ran into a display on their homepage showing their viewers their Alexa and Google Page Rank. But what exactly do these ranks mean and what can they do to help get your site noticed on the web. Here’s a basic description of what these two tools do

Google Page Rank

Google page rank also known as PR for short is a score used by Google as a rough guide to determine how popular your site is. This score is taken primarily from both your external and internal links and how they relate to your site. Because of the amount of autonomous pages now on the internet (Hubs and articles for example) Google indexes each page on any site as if those pages are all autonomous of each other. This is why you’ll have pages that have a pr rank or one score and others that have a different score. It’s also common to see a sites homepage have a higher page rank then its other pages, this is a result of more links linking to your homepage then a specific page you created.

So how does Google page rank score your site? Google uses a number system from 0 to 10, zero being that your site is either brand new or that you don’t have enough inbound links, ten meaning your one of a handful of sites that are the most popular on the net, such as Google and Yahoo for example.

Google also places a higher importance to sites that link to you that have a higher page rank. This means that the higher ranking sites link to you, you become more popular in the eyes of Google, even against sites that have more but lower pr ranking sites linking to them. And more popular means you get a higher page rank.

Having a high Google page rank however doesn’t mean your site will have better search engine results placement. (SERP for short) Look up some sites on Google and many of those sites have low page rank, or not even any. Search engine placement is primarily based on keywords and how often those keywords are used to relation to finding your site.

That’s not to say you shouldn’t care about bumping up your pr rank because it will help your site over time, especially when it comes to linking to other sites.

To see your pr rank or the pr rank of another site you can download Google Toolbar

Alexa Page Rank

Your Alexa rank is determined from the information it collects from users who have installed an Alexa Toolbar and provides you with an estimated number of your sites performance when stacked against other sites. For Alexa the lower the number the better with special graphs and stats being made available to you when you reach a rank of 100,000 or less.

The main thing you have to remember with Alexa page rank is that the number they provide is estimated based on the number of users who have an Alexa toolbar installed. It only works with Windows systems and the Internet Explorer browser. So if you have a visitor using another browser they won’t count.

It gets worse when dealing with users who don’t speak English as their primary language because the majority of users who install Alexa speak English. Basically Alexa breaks down like this, it’s an estimated number that you can use to help get a better idea of your sites popularity, but I don’t recommend relying on it. You shouldn't also use it as a determining factor when looking to link up to other sites, because a low Alexa rank doesn’t mean that site gets no traffic, just not as much from those who use Alexa.

At the end of the day these two tools can help, but their not something you need to obsess over. Google and Alexa rank will improve automatically as your site gets older, you increase the number of quality back links to your site, get your keywords listed on the top pages of Google search, and most importantly you add content to your site that attracts users to your site. Hope this helps
