Why Is Trust Rank Important And What Can You Do To Get It

Every SEO and web expert out there and their dog will tell you how important Google page rank is to your site and how it can help your site rank well in search engine listings. One thing you might not have heard about is trust rank. It’s important to understand what this seo tool is, and to start making changes now because this is the direction Google is looking at taking.

What Is Trust Rank?

By definition Trust Rank is an SEO algorithm that’s been created for semi-automatically separating useful web pages from spam and bad neighbourhood sites. So every time two sites link to each other it signifies trust. Like Google page rank which gives you a page rank based on how popular your site is and the number of high page ranking sites link to you, trust rank will give you a score. Unlike Google page rank this score is based not on the number of back links you have but the trust and authority your site has.

In short it’s a seo rank tool used to help keep good websites linking to each other and bad websites to do the same, at least in a perfect world. Obviously there will always be black hat seo tricks out there to trick the system for short term gain.

Why Is Trust Rank Important For Your Site?

Let’s say you have a question, you go to Google or whatever search engine you use, and type in your question. What you see depending on what you’re looking for are a bunch of sites that rank first but might not actually answer your question. The pages that are displayed for your search are the on top landing page because the site owners optimised their sites using various seo tricks, link building strategies, social book marking, and other techniques to get on the top page.

What trust rank attempts to do is solve this by ranking pages on authority and trust rather then the number of one way back links a particular site has. It has a long way to go but this is the direction Google is looking at going towards. Because of this eventually older link building methods won’t have the same influence as they do currently, think reciprocal links which used to hold a lot more authority then they do now.

What Steps You Can Take To Get Your Site A High Trust Rank

There are a number of things you can do to start getting your site ready. The sooner you act the better off you’ll be and the better your site will rank against your competition.

1. Domain age

The domain age of your site will always be a big factor when it comes to how much trust Google and other search engines give your site. Older domain names equals more authority because they’ve been their longer, they’ve proved that there not some random fly by night operation that will disappear 6 months down the road. Unlike in the past domain age won’t be the determining factor when it comes to trust rank.

2. Social Networks

This is no big secret, social networks (Twitter, Facebook, Stumbleupon for example) are where people are going, and if you haven’t started adding links from these sites to yours then you better start and fast. The more content of yours is distributed and talked about on these sites, the more Google knows about your site. They’ll use the information on these sites to determine if they can trust you and if your site is an authoritative site.

3. User Content

A good comment made from a visitor can go a long way, and will be an even bigger factor when it comes to trust rank. Not only because positive feedback from comments will make other visitors pay closer attention to you, but is analyzed by Google search engineers to help them understand what people are saying about you, and will use that information to rank you accordingly.

4. Link To Authoritative Sites And Check Up On Those Links

Not only should you link to authoritative sites you should do so more frequently. (Obviously don’t spam your links because that will have the opposite effect) To ensure you build up a positive trust rank you want to also keep a closer eye on sites you do link up to make sure the those websites or blogs are still in good standing. If you’re unsure of a site’s standing with Google you might want to consider not linking to it.

You also want to aim for seed sites. These are websites that have been manually selected as being trustworthy by search engine owners.

5. Content Is Still King

No matter what new changes come down, the quality of the content you place on your site will always be the most important factor when it comes to building a good website. After all you can have the best designed layout with all the fancy buttons and graphics, but if you have nothing to offer of value then nobody is going to visit, or at least for very long.

6. User Date

Both Google and Bing are already collecting information from their toolbars for SERP’s. (Search Engine Results Page) This puts an even bigger emphasis on having quality content on your site. It also makes it that much harder for those who use black hat seo tricks to fool the system because (as of now at least) they can’t really do anything to gain user data.

7. Back Links

Back links are always going to play a major factor in the trust Google places on your site. Obviously you want back links from high authority sites, such as web 2.0 sites. (Blogger, Hub Pages Digg etc)

8. Don’t Be A One Page Wonder

To be an authority site and to gain Google’s trust you need to have a site that offers more then just a couple pages. The search engines want websites with good content, so if you have many pages with great content it’s not rocket science that your site will have a much easier time building trust rank.

Follow these steps and produce the best quality content that you can and your site will do well and be trusted by Google and the other big search engines
