Maybe you’re new to SEO and you’re not really sure what to do. Perhaps you own a business and need your name out there fast, or you just don‘t have the time and need the extra help to get your website out there to the world. Whatever the reason you’ve decided to go with an SEO company or consultant. When choosing an SEO consultant there are a lot of things you need to look into before you spend anything. Here’s a list of 6 things you need to look at before choosing an SEO consultant or company.

1. Do they offer top search engine ranking?

Have you ever heard the saying that if something seems to good to be true then it probably is? The same applies here; there are no guarantees in life online or anywhere. So if an SEO consultant tells you that they can 100% guarantee your site will show up on the first page of Google for highly competitive search terms you should be concerned.

Many cheaper SEO companies will resort to using black hat SEO tricks to achieve top rankings. This might give your site a short term benefit, long term though your site will be hurt, and those dreams of untold numbers of visitors and making money online could be in jeopardy.

2. Do they have any experience?

This should be the first thing you look for when choosing an SEO company or consultant. If they have next to no experience, or worse refuse to highlight their previous experience or qualifications don’t do business with them.

3. Do they understand you?

This seems like an obvious question but important one. Whoever you pick to be your SEO consultant needs to have a clear understanding of what you’re trying to do and what you’re about. There’s no point to ranking well for “fluffy white kittens” when your site is all about selling mud flaps for tractor trailers, it just doesn’t make sense.

4. What will your money get you?

When looking at different consultants or companies rates you need to consider how much bang for your buck you’re going to get. Do you want some fly by night consultant you’ve never heard of before? Some outsourced company that doesn’t understand what you’re telling them. Or someone who can back up what they say and have proven results. It might cost more in the short term, but your return on investment (ROI) will be much greater.

5. Are they vague about their SEO Strategy?

Do they let you know what’s going on and how they plan on getting your site good rankings, or do they treat SEO like it’s some mystical secret society that you’re not a part of? If the answer is the second one you should look elsewhere. Some of the things you need to be able to ask them are:
Do the

a. what are their methods to analyze your current position

b. what kind of keyword research are they doing and what are their sources

c. will they look at your targeted keywords and recommend any changes

d. who will make those changes

If they refuse to be open about what they intend to do, use someone else.

6. How approachable are they?

Customer service is always important, and if the SEO consultant or company you chose, brushes you off, takes forever to respond to your questions, or leaves you on infinite hold when on the phone, ditch them their not worth the headache.
