Alexa site rank like Google’s page rank is a measure to determine how popular a particular website or blog is. And while Alexa isn’t an accurate representation since it’s only limited to those who use their toolbar it can still be an important factor when it comes to generating traffic, getting others to link to you, and advertising on your site. If you’re not familiar with how Alexa page ranking works it essentially works like this.

Each site listed on Alexa gets a numbered score much in the same way Google page rank works. The big difference is that unlike Google which gives your site a rank from 0 to 10 if it’s been indexed, Alexa site rank counts down to 1. The closer your site ranks to 1 the better your rank.

To increase Alexa rank isn’t difficult, there is no magical super secret trick to get from a rank of 20 million to number 1 overnight. To get a higher Alexa site rank you need to work at it and should be focusing on two major areas.

1. Getting Traffic

Since your Alexa rank depends on the number of visitors your site gets who use the Alexa toolbar you obviously need to attract more of them to your site. This is done by first having content that is appealing, and original. I know that kind of sounds like beating a dead horse since everyone and their dog will tell you that, but the reality is it’s true. Why would you want to visit a site that’s full of useless junk, it doesn’t make sense.

2. Getting back links

Just like traffic the number of back links your website or blog has will make a big impact on your Alexa traffic ranking. They go hand in hand; more quality back links equals more traffic, which means better search engine rankings, better Google page rank and better Alexa site rank.

Of course there are other simple things you can do to help influence your Alexa rank, some of these are more effective then others and depending on your site the results will vary.

1. Visiting your site everyday

If you have the Alexa toolbar installed you can influence your rank by simply visiting your own site everyday. You’re not going to have a huge impact on it but it does help.

2. Offer a toolbar

Alexa has a custom toolbar creator that you can put on your site to encourage others to download it. Ask your friends and regular visitors to download either your toolbar or go to Alexa and install their own. Remember your Alexa site rank is determined by the number of visitors your site gets who use their toolbar, so the more you can get the better.

3. Add their widgets

Like Google page rank if you have it you want to display it, remember not everyone is going to have the toolbar or page rank displayed on their browsers. Displaying your Alexa rank helps encourage others to link to you.

4. Get Alexa to audit your site

Only do this if your comfortable shelling out about 150 dollars, personally I’m cheap and wouldn’t spend that, but that’s me. That being said if you have a business and need to rank well with your site this is an option to consider. If your blogging as a hobby about My Little Pony don’t waste your cash.

5. Visit the Alexa Website and claim your site to get maximum authority

6. Write an article about Alexa and link to their site

7. Post frequently

You should have a regular schedule for adding new content to your site. Of course it’s not always possible to write something new everyday, but it should be consistent to attract regular readers.

Like I mentioned earlier there is no “magic solution” to getting a higher Alexa rank. Like other ways of generating traffic to your site, it takes time, work, and a little trial and error to get results.
