Google Advisor

Recently the powers that be at Google launched Google Advisor essentially rolling all of it’s financial tools (this includes their mortgage, credit card, and bank comparison tools) into one product. The goal according to Google’s official blog is to have a site designed to help you quickly find relevant financial products from many providers and compare them side by side.

How it works

According to Google you simply enter the information you’re looking for in a mortgage, credit card, or savings and chequing account. Your then shown a list of offers that match your criteria as well as rates and contact information. Updates and changes are shown instantly to help you find a tailor made result. They also have the option of being able to contact and apply for the desired.

Google has also taken steps to deal with privacy concerns or identity theft.

According to Google Advisor’s privacy policy when you call the number of a lender you’re in fact calling a special Google phone number. Google then forwards your call to the lender to keep your phone number confidential. At any time the potential lender never sees your number unless you decide to let them. This is also applied on any request form for additional information. Instead Google gives the lender a special number they can call to be connected to your phone. It’s a similar system to how Pay Pal works at any time neither party knows the contact information of the other but are able to transfer that information through a neutral go between, in this case Google.

So is Google Advisor worth it

For the time being Google Advisor is only available in the United States so if your like myself living in Canada or in another country you can visit the site, but apart from checking out different rates to check for a potential investment property in the U.S is pretty much useless. Though you can bet that within a few months this service will be available in other countries. Google also has some very well established competition when it comes to comparison engines such as Mint or Bankrate. Google also has a long way to go in my opinion with developing advisor especially in Europe were the competition for comparison sites like this is very heavy. Compared to Mint which is very well established, Google Advisor is on the clunky side. It also wasn’t able to display all the rates I was looking for. While this could be the result of no listings for that particular category it does leaving me wondering how accurate this service really is.

Overall though Google Advisor does a decent job, and once a bit of time passes and the site is updated some more the service should get better. To check out Google Advisor you can visit the site with the link here.
