Microsoft’s new social network Tulalip

With all the talk about Google and their new social network Google Plus, (Or Google+) it looks like there could soon be a new player to what appears to be a rapidly growing social network feud. Recently either by accident or on purpose Microsoft unveiled a new site called Tulalip. Personally I don’t think this was by accident, rather a clever way at generating some buzz.

So what is Tulalip exactly?

Details are for the moment a little sketchy but it appears this is Microsoft’s attempt at getting into the social networking scene currently dominated by Facebook. The web page was found on Socl.com, this is a URL that Microsoft bought last year, and apparently paid about 2.6 million for.

It appears that this new social network will somehow deliver its users information rapidly and supposedly make sharing that content faster and easier then ever.

The page (displayed below) was promptly taken down and was replaced with a blank page with the following cryptic message

“Socl.com is an internal design project from a team in Microsoft Research which was mistakenly published to the web”

Also officials at Microsoft are remaining tight lipped about this new site; however to me it seems a little suspicious that they would “accidentally” release this page just a couple weeks after Google+ is announced.

What isn’t speculation are the facts surrounding the popularity of social networks. Just about everyone who uses the internet uses at least one social networking site. Many of these same people visit more then once a day. And currently in the United States alone about 25% of all web traffic starts from a social networking site, and that number is expected to rise. With those kinds of numbers, and the fact that search engine traffic is actually dropping, it’s no wonder all the big players are scrambling to cut out their own slice of the social network pie.

The real question though, isn’t if Microsoft’s new social network will be any good, but rather do we really need another one?
