Leaving Good Comments - How To Get Noticed

One of the ways to get people to notice your site is to comment on other blogs and websites. The benefits of leaving good comments are that you not only get to add your two cents about a topic, you can also gain valuable links pointing to your site.

Sounds easy right, and for the most part it is, but when selecting blogs or websites to comment on you need to consider some things. First try to find sites related to your niche, while you can comment on any site you want you stand a better chance of getting traffic from that site if it’s a related site. You also want these sites if possible to be on the number one page of Google for keywords you’re trying to rank for.

And last if it’s a blog you want to leave a comment on is it a “do follow” or “no follow”. Generally speaking when it comes to blog comments Blogger has no follow meaning that these links aren’t counted towards the number of back links your site has and make no impact on you gaining position in search engine rankings. Of course the blog owner can change this but most don’t. On the other hand sites like Wordpress tend to be do follow meaning they count. They also have what’s called “comment love” that will display your most recent post on their site as a sort of free advertisement for you.

Now that you’ve found some sites you want to leave comments on, you need to know how to get your comments to stand out and get noticed by the site owner and others reading their posts.

1. Comment often

Now that you’ve found some sites you like you want to comment on their sites on a regular basis. Make sure you actually spend some time and READ their post. I personally hate when people ask a question I covered or wrote a comment and obviously didn’t read the post, I also tend to delete them and I guarantee many other site owners do the same thing.

2. Be the early bird

One way you can make sure your comments get noticed is to be one of the first to comment on a new post if not the first one. It’s vital when your blog comments are at the top of the pile that you leave something that stands out. Otherwise if it’s a crap comment people won’t remember it and won’t follow it to your site.

3. Disagree

You want to be careful that when you disagree on a comment that you piss off the site owner and get your comment deleted. But if there is something that you strongly don’t agree with or if there is a big error on their post, disagreeing with what they’ve said is a great way to get noticed. Avoid being a troll and throwing up something negative for the sake of trying to get noticed. Calling somebody’s mom a whore isn’t going to get you very far.

4. Don’t be a comment zombie

When it comes to comments I hate the ones where people type in something that resonates boring and flat. If you want to make sure your comments get noticed put some soul into it. If you’re feeling happy write happy. If you’re angry let it come through. THIS DOSEN’T MEAN TYPING EVERYTHING WITH CAPS LOCK ON that’s just annoying.

5. Humour me

Want your comment to stand out, make it funny. Tell a joke or be a little sarcastic. You can still get across a serious point but throwing some humour into it. And doing so might help get your comments noticed from the a typical dreary comments that site gets a tonne of.

6. Comment length

Personally I don’t mind when a comment is long, most of the time it’s something well thought out and makes me think. However take at the other comments to see what people are saying. If almost every comment for example is long, write a short one. If there short then write a longer one. Just remember if your going to write a longer one that you space it out in such a way as to make it easier to read. This way blog comments don’t look like a block of text. Your objective is to leave good comments that get noticed, not passed over because it makes peoples eyes hurt.

7. Ask questions

I consider questions to be a win, win situation; questions can help start a discussion getting people to submit multiple comments on a particular post helping the site owner. And it helps you by answering your question giving you information; future topic ideas for you site and traffic. Were all wired to answer questions so when a commenter post a question it tends to stop people even for just a moment to read the question.

8. Formatting comments

This is something that you need to be careful with, because doing this too often will make you look like a spammer. Many blogs allow commenter’s to use HTML when leaving comments. This means you can do things like using bullets with different symbols to list points, or change the text to allow bold words and italics to name a few examples. Using symbols gives viewers a subtle visual cue to check out what you’ve posted.

9. Don’t comment for comments sake

Leaving good comments means just that, your comments should add some value. If you don’t having anything useful to say….then don’t. Your comments are your chance to leave a good impression with others to get them to come to your site. So unless you don’t care about getting traffic to your site leave worthwhile comments, not junk.

10. Add a point

If the site owner missed something on there post, there’s nothing wrong with adding additional information. This helps you by showing their readers that you know what you’re talking about. And if people think you know what you’re doing chances are good they’ll be paying your site a visit.
