Crap Comments - How You Can Hurt Your Site By Leaving Bad Comments

Leaving comments on blogs and websites. It doesn’t matter if the site is a “do follow” or not, building links through comments can help get the word out about your site. Comments are also a good indicator if you’re doing something right and can give you great feedback. Of course in a perfect world every comment would be a good one, the reality is that at some point your going to get bad comments or comment vomit if you will. Self centered crap that’s there to only advertise their site, bash yours, and all other types of garbage that adds nothing of value.

So if you want to get links from comments rather then having them deleted, here is a list of things to avoid. It’s important to note that everyone is different and some site owners will tolerate things differently then others.

1. One and two word comments

This one depends on what you’ve posted, something like a video you might only get a one word comment and for things like that (At least in my opinion) that’s fine. But generally writing something like “Cool site” or “Hi” are bad comments. They add nothing to the post. Many people fire off these simple comments because they think that more is better. The reality is that a well thought out and insightful comment will go a lot farther.

2. Grammar Nazi’s

You want to know how you can hurt your site by leaving bad comments be a  grammar Nazi. We all make mistakes, sometimes the spell check misses a word or two, maybe our information got a little messed up, that happens were human. And when I get comments telling me that I made a mistake or something doesn’t gel, that’s a good thing because I can fix those mistakes. When it goes overboard is when you go anal retentive and pick out every single minor error. If you’re pointing out all the minor spelling errors or if something should be capitalized or not please stop all you’re doing is pissing off the sites owner who will probably delete your comment and or ignore everything you said.

3. Personal attacks

I see this all the time, somebody doesn’t like something and starts bashing the person calling them names, threatening them and all that kind of comment vomit. It’s easy to do considering how easy it is to misinterpret what somebody wrote. You’re not seeing the persons face when they wrote the comment, so it can be difficult to tell if they were being serious, joking, or something in-between. Videos are a different story were people have personnel attacks fired at them because of the way they look, sound, or their opinions.

In the sort term starting a personal attack will get you some attention and can even start a discussion. However in the long run it won’t help your site, that site owner will most likely remove your comment. Not to mention any chance of them visiting unless it’s to bash you is pretty unlikely.

4. Self promotion

Another bad comment that can hurt your site and your reputation is when you self promote yourself. This is where you turn the comment space into your own little advertisement. For me personally I have no problem with people dropping a link to their site in the comment box. But when the entire comment is nothing more then talking about your website it’s a crap comment and it gets deleted right away. Nobody wants to spam plastered on their site.

5. Anonymous bashing

When it comes to crap comments this one is in a league all on its own. It’s not enough to trash someone’s site but to not leave any way to respond, not to attack to but for some constructive talk about how to fix the problem. I’ve also found in the past that several “anonymous” comments were actually from regular commenter’s who posted anonymously to try to promote their site.

6. Not reading before you comment

Personally I really hate these. Take a minute and actually read the post before you comment. This is especially important if you have a question, because there’s a good chance that the answer might be in the content. Asking a question that’s been answered only makes you look like a fool. It’s also important to read the post to see if anything is missing or incorrect. Adding a comment that fixes a mistake or ads to what the site owner is trying to get across puts a big spotlight on your comment. It shows you know what your talking about and that you were paying attention.

7. New subscriber/ follower comments

How often do you get a comment that looks something like this?

“Hi I’m new to your site. Just stopped in to say hi, I’m following you please follow me back”

Or perhaps something that looks like this?

“Cool site come check mine out at www.somerandomsite.blah”

This can be viewed two ways. First the positive being that your site got their attention, they found it interesting and wrote a quick comment hoping you’ll return the favour and visit and follow them. The negative is that whoever wrote the comment took a quick look at your site including the page rank and Alexa rank, has a website or blog that they want to promote, and decided that they would fire off a quick comment to get an easy link. At least that’s how I would interpret a comment like that.

Put yourself in the perspective that you’re on the receiving end of a comment like that, would you pay it any attention? Or would you simply delete it because it looks like spam?
