It used to be that if you wanted to rank well you only had one search to target, which was the main search page. It didn’t matter if you were going to share content with Google or another search engine. If you wanted to rank for a specific keyword or phrase you cold only do this through SERP’s. Fortunately those days are long gone and site owners can promote their content through a number of different channels. The search engines are very hungry for this kind of content, especially Google which is…….well a total whore when it comes to vertical search content.

Often ranking through these channels can be much easier then the traditional methods. And because Google is so hungry for this kind of content it only makes sense that if you have content to share with Google that you look at some of the alternatives. Google offers 36 tools for submitting different content types. Below is a list of 10 ways you can share content with Google that I think are the most useful.

1. Feedburner

Feedburner allows you to offer your visitors an RSS feed option where your recent posts are streamlined for people to get quick updates about your new posts. Sites like Blogger already have a feed function built into them, but Feedburner allows you more customization options, and the all important ability to monetize your feed.

However some website platforms such as Webstarts don’t have an RSS feed (their blog section does but it usually doesn’t work). You can create an RSS feed for free though and run it through Feedburner.

2. Blog search

Blog search is a way to share with Google your web log updates. These updates in turn are then shared with other search engines and submit it to a list of blogs that need to be crawled.

3. Webmaster tools

As far as I’m concerned this is a must have feature. With this tool you can upload your site maps, diagnose any crawling issues, view both your internal linking and sites that link to you, and view detailed reports about your sites visibility on Google.

4. Gadgets

Another way you can share your content with Google is to create a widget and submit it to Google. These gadgets are for iGoogle homepages. Create one that’s interesting and grabs attention and it get you some referral traffic.

5. YouTube

If you didn’t know Google owned YouTube then you’ve been living under a rock for some time now. This should also be one of the first places you submit content outside of your website because it’s the most searched site on the internet today. You can easily upload videos promoting your site with links pointing back to it. And if your videos are 100 percent copyright free and become popular you can also monetize them by becoming a YouTube partner.

6. Google places

According to Google 97 percent of consumers search online for local businesses. That being said I’m always surprised when a local business doesn’t do this. Google does automatically add business listings to places, but you need to keep an eye out to make sure the information they added is correct and not your home address. Another way to stand out and share content with Google is to use Business photos. This allows visitors to take a virtual tour of the inside of your business. These can combine with street view to visitors a complete picture of your business and location.

7. Street view

This won’t apply to everyone but if you own a business you can use street view to promote it. This service provides visitors with a 360 degree street level image that they can use to explore.

8. Video search

If you publish videos, creating a video site map is way for you to share your video content with Google so they can be included in search results. Ranking well in video searches is often easier then a traditional webpage so make sure you not only submit a video site map but also include your videos on your sites web pages as well.

9. Google product search

This allows shoppers to quickly find the products their looking for, so it’s a no brainer that if your website sell stuff that you want to use this service. Always make sure that you keep on top of any requirement changes and your data is continuously updated to maximise your results.

10. Book search partner program

Recently wrote a book? If yes you can promote your books for free with this site. Viewers are able to view a limited number of pages to determine if your literary masterpiece is what their looking for, and provides links to your website, online retailers or bookstores that sell that book. Google also has a magazine and eBook feature as well.

Like I said at the top of the page there are 36 different tools where you can share content with Google. Depending on your website or business not all of these will apply to you. To see the full list you can click here to view it.
