Traffic, if you have a website or a blog you want to get website traffic and as much of it as possible. It doesn’t matter if your site is to make money, to connect with others, for a business, or display your love for all things kittens, if you’re a site owner you want traffic. So how do you go about getting website traffic? Here is a list I put together of 100 different things you can do to get traffic to your website. These aren’t in any particular order of importance and not all of them will work for each site the same way. Some sites will have better results with some of these options then others.

1. Write quality content

Nobody is going to stay or your site for very long or come back if your content sucks. This should be your biggest priority to attract visitors to your site. Because without this your website has nothing.

2. Add a blog

These are great for static sites as it gives you a way to include new content and encourage visitors to come back and comment.

3. Comment on other blogs

It doesn’t matter if the blog is a “do follow” or not leaving quality comments on other blogs is a great way to get back links to your site, establish yourself as an authority and get your site recognized. Just remember not to spam.

4. Create an RSS feed

This is an easy way for visitors to subscribe and receive updates when you post new content and something every website and blog should have.

5. Get on YouTube

Youtube is the biggest video sharing site in the world and a huge source of traffic. If you’re not using this site start.

6. Submit your videos to other sites

Youtube is the biggest but there are plenty of other sites to post your videos and get traffic from. A few of them are.

a. Daily Motion
b. Metacafe
c. Facebook
d. Vimeo

7. Create a customized 404 error page

Rather then having a boring 404 page when you delete or change the url of a site create a custom one that provides links to other pages on your site, offers information. Whatever you do make it stand out to grab attention.

8. Highlight your popular content

People like to know what’s hot when their visiting a site. You can dramatically increase page views if you highlight your popular content and encourage them to read it.

9. Keep your website loading fast

Nobody likes a slow website, the slower your site takes to load up the more people will leave. Keep your web pages load speed to 4 seconds and under, anything more and you risk losing traffic.

10. Interlink your pages

You should do this before you launch your website because it allows your visitors to explore your site easily. It also improves your search engine rankings since the bots will also be able to move from page to page, and link juice can be passed between them.

11. Create a mobile version of your website

I-pods and Blackberries are everywhere so why not capitalize on it. Provide your visitors who use mobile devices a mobile friendly version of your site.

12. Join online forums

Regardless of your websites niche there will be forums out there you can post comments on. Make sure to put a link to your website as your signature.

13. Write articles on Ezine 

You can write as many articles as you want on this site. What makes this site stick out is that it holds a lot of authority with Google. If someone likes your article they can also publish it on their site giving you more traffic and links.

14. Advertise your site on Craigslist

You have to be careful with this one as they like to shoot down anyone promoting a website. But if you offer something such as link exchanges or a spot to guest post on it can be a great way to get fast traffic and brand recognition to your website.

15. Answer questions on Yahoo Answers

Another way to get website traffic fast is to answer questions on Yahoo answers. Once you reach level 2 on their site you can post a link to your website when you answer a question. If your answer is selected as the best answer your answer and link appear at the top of the page. 

16. Submit to directories

Sites like DMOZ hold a lot of weight still. They can take awhile to get indexed on them since many are human monitored to keep out spammers.

17. Exchange links

While reciprocal links hold no link juice it’s still a way to get your site noticed and bring traffic to your site. 

18. Get inbound links

Your goal when getting inbound links is to get the highest page rank as possible as this will help boost your website up as well. While links from lower ranking sites are fine to, it takes fewer high ranking sites to get your website to rank higher.

19. Submit links to social sites

Digg, Stumbleupon, and Reddit are just a couple social sites you should be using to get back links from. These sites get crawled all the time, so having links on these sites will help get your website indexed that much faster.

20. Use Facebook ads

Advertising on Facebook is cheaper then using Google Adwords (about 50% less) making it a more viable option when you have to advertise on a tight budget.

21. Word of mouth

Tell your friends your family, and anyone you run into out in the world. Word of mouth is still one of the best forms of advertising.

With word of mouth you should also have business cards to hand out that contains your website URL and contact such as your email. 

23. Advertise your site offline

Other ways to advertise your site offline are

a. stickers
b. t-shirts
c. buy an ad in a newspaper
d. call your local radio station and give yourself a shout out
e. put an ad on your car

24. List your website for sale

Even if you’re not actually going to sell your site you might be able to score some additional traffic from perspective buyers.

25. Visit your site from computer stores

The next time you’re at a computer store use their computers to browse your site. This is also a good way to see how your site is displayed on different monitors and operating systems to look for errors and problem areas.

26. Set your website as the homepage on any computer you use 

Next time you’re at an internet café or a school library change the default page to your websites homepage.

27. Run contests and offer a prize

People like contests especially when they can win something for free. You can start out with something small such as a t-shirt or a hat.

28. Create Squidoo pages

Using Squidoo is a fast easy way to create links that point back to your site. You can also earn money through them.

29. Create a hub on Hub Pages

Like Squidoo Hub Pages allows you to create a mini site that can link back to your website. You can also make money from it from Google Adsense, Amazon, Ebay, and Kontara.

30. Create a Facebook fan page

Facebook is a great source of traffic. With a fan page your not limiting your online presence to your immediate friends, a fan page can be seen by everyone.

31. Ping your site when you create new content

Pinging tells the search engines that you created new content and gets their attention. The result is that your site can be crawled and indexed faster. Make sure you do it only when you have new content, not when you add a picture or change a color.

32. Include your URL in emails

Next time you submit an email include a link to your site. It’s a simple effective trick to get traffic.

Like Yahoo answers LinkedIn has their own version you can use to establish yourself as an authority while building links back to your site.

35. Translate your content

Making your content available to visitors who don’t speak English as their primary language can open you up to a tonne more traffic. Simply add a translate button onto your site.

36. Use long tail keywords

These are keywords that use more then two words. Because they have less competition their easier to rank for. 

37. Add new content all the time

Google loves new content, so give them what they want. Create new articles and posts on a regular basis. Add keywords to all of them to expand your sites visibility.

38.  Get links from .gov and .edu websites

These sites hold a lot of authority with Google and are highly prized links. That being said there not easy to get.

39. Get links from similar sites

Inbound links from similar sites helps boost your authority in your niche, and it shows that your competition finds your site valuable.

40. Include a like button 

Facebooks like button allows visitors to share your content on their Facebook accounts. It’s also an indicator of how popular your content is.

41. Get Google’s Plus 1 Button

The plus 1 button is similar to Facebook’s like button. And while it’s still in question as to just how effective it will be for SEO, anything you can get people to click on makes you look more popular.

42. Get a Stumbleupon button and Digg button

These two are huge in that the more people who click on these buttons on your site are helping to push your content up and making it more visible on each site.

43. Create profiles on social networking sites

Don’t leave them blank, people do check out users profiles on these sites so it’s a great place to advertise your site and display a link to your homepage.

44. Launch a podcast

All you need is a decent microphone with a USB connection and you can create your own pod cast. The good thing about these is there isn’t a lot of competition when compared to other ways to get website traffic.

45. Use images

Google images is another way to get your site found. Whenever you add a picture always ad an alt tag using a keyword you want to rank for and a link to a particular page on your site.

46. Offer a free download

This can be anything from a file, ebook, music. If it’s free people want it.

47. Add a forum to your site

I wouldn’t recommend doing this on a brand new site. But if you have a decent amount of traffic and are looking to expand on it this might be worth checking out. This will give visitors a way to ask questions and add content.

48. Update your site on a regular basis

Google likes sites that update and add content all the time. It shows them that your site is active. Constantly tweak and perfect things to make it run smoother and faster. Add new features; change the background once in awhile. Doing these kinds of changes can help your site get crawled more often.

49. Write something controversial

I’ll let you decide how extreme you want to go with this one. But I guarantee if you write something that goes against the norm it’ll stand out and almost compel people to comment and come back to check for any responses.

50. Guest post

This can work in one of two ways; either you have guest posters on your site. This gives you additional content and keeps your site updating. Or post an article as a guest poster on another site to attract new visitors and build back links.
